We are discussing in this article about the low pass filters in image processing and in the next article we will discuss high pass filters in digital image processing.
The purpose of using low pass filters in image processing is to perform smoothing which is achieved by blurring. Low pass filters in image processing are very useful and we can achieve the low pass components of an image by converting a spatial domain image into a frequency domain image.
Full Concept of Low Pass Filters & Types in Image Processing
Low pass component of an image is obtained by using a low pass filter which attenuates a specific range of high frequencies. You can easily implement low pass filter in Matlab and then try on different images. We use very simple model to perform filtering in the Fourier domain i.e.
F (u, v) is the image which we want to smooth and H (u, v) is the filter function which will perform low pass filtering on the original image. G (u, v) is output after attenuating the high frequency components.
There are three main types of low pass filters:
Ideal Low pass filters.
Butterworth Low pass filters
Gaussian Low pass filters
1. Ideal Low Pass Filters (ILPF):
The ideal low pass filter is the simplest filter that cuts off all the high frequencies of an image. D0 is the cutoff in this filter. This filter allows the frequencies to pass between origins to D0. All the frequencies outside this cutoff is blocked.
Transfer function of ideal low pass filters is:
If an image has M x N size, then its transform will be also of the same size and center of frequency rectangle would be like this:

When the ideal low pass filter has applied to any image, then it produces the ringing artifact in the filtered image. Ringing artifact of ideal low pass filters (ILPFs) can be reduced by using higher cutoff frequencies.

2. Butterworth Low Pass Filters (BLPF):
The Butterworth low pass filter is a compromise between ideal low pass and Gaussian low pass filter.

Here “n” is the order of Butterworth low passing filter, whereas D0 is the cutoff of the Butterworth filter. In Butterworth filter there are no discontinuities or ringing artifact like the ideal low pass filters. If you use order 2 Butterworth filter, then you can see the ringing effects, but order 1 Butterworth low pass filter in image processing have no ringing or circular lines.
A Butterworth low pass filter of order 20 expresses the characteristics of ideal low pass filters.

3. Gaussian Low Pass Filters (GLPF):

The Fourier transform is much better and useful as compared to the Fourier series, any image or function which can be represented in Fourier series or Fourier transform can be recovered or reconstructed completely by just doing inverse process without losing any information.
What is Frequency Domain Filtering Concept in Image Processing
In 1950’s Fourier transform was developed and it brings a revolution in the field of signal and image processing.
There are two main techniques of image processing:
Spatial domain filtering
Frequency domain filtering.
Relation between spatial domain filtering and Frequency domain filtering:
Today we are discussing the frequency domain filtering and its types. Multiplication in the spatial domain is equal to the convolution in the frequency domain. A filter in spatial domain is equivalent to the frequency domain filter. Both domains filter have the same size but filtering in frequency domain is more intuitive than the spatial domain.
We take the image in spatial domain, then convert into the frequency domain by taking its Fourier transform and then apply the filtering in the frequency domain and then convert it back to the spatial domain by taking its inverse Fourier transform. This is the basic technique of frequency domain filtering.
Some important information of images is accessible and controllable in the frequency domain. When we convert an image in the frequency domain, then we have two important frequencies, i.e. Low frequencies and high frequencies.
Images in Fourier domain or the frequency domain filtering:
An image in Fourier domain contains the both low frequencies as well as high frequencies. Low frequencies in the Fourier transform contain more information about the gray level appearance of an image. High frequencies in Fourier transform are responsible for details such as sharp edges and noise.
So you can use two filters to deal with each low pass and high pass frequencies of image when dealing with frequency domain filtering. A low pass filter attenuates high frequencies or block all the high pass frequencies and allow the low pass frequencies to pass through that’s why it is called low pass filter in frequency domain for image enhancement.

There are two main types of filters in the frequency domain which are further subdivided into three other types.
High pass frequency domain Filters
Low pass frequency domain Filters
A high pass filter blocks all the low frequencies and allow high pass frequencies to pass through and that’s why it is called high pass filter in the frequency domain for image processing.
Low pass filter allows you to deal with more gray level information and high pass filter allow you to deal with edges and noise.
Using a low pass filter in image processing you can perform the image smoothing whereas by using high pass filters you can perform image sharpening. There are so many other things which you can perform on images in the frequency domain filtering. Segmentation, image analysis, image processing, color image processing, color image smoothing and much more operations are possible in frequency domain filtering. Mostly purpose of frequency domain filtering is the noise removal, image sharpening and image smoothing.

The main purpose of doing digital image restoration is obtaining an estimate of the original image. Image enhancement is related to the subjective studies but the digital image restoration is an objective process in which images are improving in some predefined ways.
Digital Image restoration is reconstruction or recovering the image that was degraded earlier knowledge of the degradation process. Actually digital image restoration is doing the degradation and performing the inverse process to recover the image.
